American Girl in Italy

How does the blue mold get in Gorgonzola? Have you ever heard the rocks at Castiglioncello sing and why do writers always seek solace in Italy? Time for me to find the answers to these and see, if in doing so, I also find my home.

i am actually the lost royal heir to the small kingdom of Birundi...having been secreted away by my wet nurse when mean overlords arrived turning our little known, yet terribly chic fiefdom into a nasty republic. now my people sit glued with their eyes glazed.....dreaming of distant IRA's and stock options, having long forgotten the taste of sweet green olive oil and the scent of rosemary.

While happily slurping a wonderful plate of pasta last night with Angelo , Eric and new friend Kim, I was delightfully informed that Carbonara, that wonderfully peppery, typically romano dish, that all North Americans and Romans alike adore, dates back in Italian food history to a mere 1944. A time shortly after the allies arrived in Rome.

Funny enough, and Wikipedia confirms, the union of these perfect ingredients seems to have been the brain child of intelligent, if frugal roman cooks and well supplied American GI's. The soldiers had bacon and powdered eggs, the chefs their fantasy and so this creamy first course was born.

eheheheeh.

It is nice to know, in these days of "why are we there and when are we leaving?" that there was a time when an American soldier's presence meant positive change.

Sono belle parole amica mia, forti ed intense. Piene di passionalità. Fortunato é l'uomo degno dell'inchiostro della aulica mente.
